Originating in Chicago during the early 1980s, House emerged as a vibrant and influential genre that seamlessly blended elements of disco, funk, and electronic music. Pioneered by DJs and music producers from Chicago’s underground club culture, house music was characterised by a repetitive four-on-the-floor beat and a typical tempo of 120 beats per minute, representing a re-emergence of the disco sound from the 1970s. DJs played a pivotal role in the genre’s evolution, gradually altering disco songs to incorporate a more mechanical beat. By early 1988, house music had transcended its underground roots, becoming a mainstream sensation. Its infectious rhythms and innovative production techniques helped its global spread, turning it into a cultural phenomenon that created many new sub-genres.

In the United Kingdom during the late 1980s, another groundbreaking genre was taking shape – UK Garage (UKG). Syncopated rhythms, soulful vocals, and a distinctive 2-step beat were the cornerstones of the genre, gaining UKG widespread popularity in the late ’90s and early 2000s.

During this time the underground sound of bass music was transforming, drawing inspiration from dub, reggae, and various electronic styles. Genres like dubstep, drum and bass, and jungle evolved, with artists pushing boundaries. Bass is an umbrella term which encompasses many bass line centric genres, and here at UKF we love them all, our third channel was created to capture amazing music which falls outside of drum & bass and dubstep.
