One of the most influential labels in bass house – Cheap Thrills – have some big plans this summer. The label that gave the world early and genre-affirming bangers from the likes of Hervé, Sinden, Jack Beats, Fake Blood, Detboi, High Rankin, Kissy Sell Out and many more are set to celebrate the big one-oh this summer. And there’s nothing cheap about their celebrations.
“The 10 year anniversary is a milestone that I’ve wanted to do something special with for ages now, we never expected to make it this far when we put out the first record so it’s definitely a birthday worth celebrating!” explains label founder Hervé. “I’ve called in a few favours and on July 6, we’ve got a 20 track compilation dropping featuring ten classic tracks from the likes of Fake Blood, Sinden, Project Bassline and Trevor Loveys, and also ten brand new exclusive tracks which nobody has ever heard before… We’ve got new Hervé, Fake Blood, Count & Sinden, Count of Monte Cristal and more – a great variety of sounds that we at the label are into. First though, we’ve got a taster of what’s to come with the Free Thrills giveaway compilation.”
Free Thrills is a 10 track back-to-back bass celebration featuring the likes of Fake Blood, Armand Van Helden, Taiki Nulight, Dusky, Detboi, Kill Frenzy, Mella Dee, Hervé and more. It jacks, it slaps, it bumps. It goes a little something like this and can be downloaded for persy purposes without so much as a penny. Cheap? These thrills are free….
“These are some great tracks, remixes and edits as well as feat. tracks by people we were on before they started blowing up, which should give you a good idea of what Cheap Thrills is about,” explains Hervé. “There’s plenty of bass, house, booty and wobble to get you hyped for the new music coming in July.”
If you haven’t got a good idea of what Cheap Thrills is about, read our history of Bass House feature from a few years back where the likes of AC Slater, Rico Tubbs, Valentino Khan and many more cite the importance of many Cheap Thrills acts and releases in the development of low end-characterised house music. Without the bass movement bringing together shades of speed garage, breaks, electro and house, the foundations for acts such as Chris Lorenzo, AC Slater and Cause & Affect wouldn’t be anywhere near as firm.
“It’s crazy when you look at the Cheap Thrills catalogue and how many people we’ve helped along the way,” Hervé considers. “It definitely makes me proud to see guys like Fake Bood and Sinden who were with us at the very beginning of the Cheap Thrills journey doing so well for themselves! That said, there’s just as much fresh, new talent coming through too, names like Taiki Nulight who have come in, taken the sound, and really put their own spin on it. The whole scene is just going from strength to strength and I like to think that Cheap Thrills played a part in helping it get to where it is today.”
Or where it’s heading tomorrow. Watch out on July 6 as the label will remind us why they’ve been such an influential label in bass house… And how they’ll continue to be in the future, too.
