Ivy Lab have confirmed that their long-awaited debut artist album Death Don’t Always Taste Good will arrive via their own imprint 20/20 LDN on May 11.
12 tracks deep, all writhing and flexing around the halftime / future beats access and hewn together with their barbed moody signature, Death Don’t Always Taste Good builds on the momentum of their previous dispatches, including 2016’s full-length mixtape release 20/20 LDN Vol 1.
A fine-tuned balance of club crushers and experimental jams, the album is the most consistent body of work they’ve created so far and reveals a deeper dimension to Ivy Lab’s sonic palette than we’ve experienced before. It will be the first music we’ve heard from them since they’ve become a duo and the first single to hit us is this tasty number: Cake
Cake is joined by other album highlights including the haunted house creeper Astral Pirate Theme and the daft-but-deadly Calculate, a cut which brazenly tips a wry nod to UK comedy dons Monty Python. Laced with deeper excursions and strong elements of hip-hop throughout, the album is best experienced in its entirety and, as such, is one of the first full albums of its kind to emerge from the halftime movement. The hand-drawn artwork, designed by Portland-based artist Megan Dixon, is also fittingly detailed and unique and will be presented as a poster series across two singles and the album itself.
Death Don’t Always Taste Good is the latest in an ever-amplifying line of operations from Ivy Lab in 2018. Their label has already cooked up murked goodies from exciting nex-gen beatsmiths No Puls and Havelock so far this year and the duo are set to launch a new 20/20 LDN showcase tour across the US with fellow beat splicers Deft, Paint and Shield.
