We’ve been waiting on this one for a very long time….
Debuted in April 2015 (at a Kings Day event in Amsterdam to be precise) speculation has been rife on its release ever since. The hype and heresy was all the more mysterious due to Tom’s other projects such as Prophets Of Rage (with Cypress Hill and Public Enemy) and him sharing images of himself with the likes of Skrillex.
Since performing it live at Ultra earlier this year, the track has been confirmed as Battle Sirens. Six months later and it’s finally ours.
Opening with Tom’s distinct guitar tones, rising into a properly heavy and densely layered riff, the first minute and a half is a total metal meltdown… Before Rob and Gareth plunge us headfirst into a brilliant percussion-heavy drop that sits somewhere in the dangerous no man’s land between trap and dubstep.
As always, the production is ridiculously sharp but it’s the balance of elements and unrelenting energy that really brings this together.
“Battle Sirens is the cross genre hard guitar/hard EDM mashup I’ve been waiting to hear for years,” Morello told Rolling Stone. “The devastating grooves, monster drops and insane tension that are a hallmark of both Knife Party and Rage Against the Machine are elevated to a crazy level with this jam.”
“Tom hit us up when we were in the studio saying he’d always loved the idea of merging his guitar riffs into the electronic world and we bounced some ideas back and forth until we had the final version,” state Knife Party. “Performing this track live as a surprise during our Ultra set was insane.”
Released today, Battle Sirens is a serious piece of rock/electronic fusion. And it’s rumoured to be followed by some fittingly heavy remixes. If you’re still hungry for Rage Against The Machine-related newness, angry frontman Zach De La Rocha has also dropped a new track this week. Produced by Run The Jewels El-P, it’s dangerously dope.
