Mat Zo refuses to pull punches. We know this from his uncompromising attitude on his productions. We know this from his refreshingly frank observations on Twitter. We know this from this week’s seriously impressive, 100 per cent drum & bass Fabriclive mix.
What with his now-retired MRSA alias, no one should be surprised at Mat doing a balls-deep drum & bass mix. What’s more impressive is the fact that while most producers will cook up a new guise or profile to explore a different genre, he’s actually killed his D&B alter-ego and, as he told us when we last interviewed him, is only releasing music under his one artist name.
What’s even more impressive is the widescreen array of tracks he’s selected for this mix. And how he’s mixed them.
Blends like like High Contrast’s If We Ever and Noisia’s Incessant, and Noisa, Hybris & Mefjus’s Clusterfunk and Micky Finn & Aphrodite’s Bad Ass are seriously bold and work really well. Peppered with classics along the way (such as London Elektricity’s Great Drum & Bass Swindle and Pendulum’s Girl In The Fire), Zo’s teenage years in London shine through with real gully glory.
Mat Zo is playing a D&B set on July 17 at Fabric. If you’re in London you’d be wise to head down. In the meantime, enjoy…
