It launched in October with a Camo & Krooked collaboration, it’s featured massive link-ups with Skeptical, Break, Phace and IMANU, it’s come complete with commentaries to reveal the process and inner workings of each track….
It’s Mefjus’s massive Particles project and it wraps up today with a surprise Noisia collaboration – Foundations. A homage to their own inspirations and a special dedication to a legend we lost earlier this year, it goes like this…
“Foundations is named after a big part of our early inspiration in the drum and bass world,” the four artists explain. “The rolling and funky but dark sounds of Ed Rush & Optical, Matrix & Fierce and Cause 4 Concern. This release is dedicated to the memory of Edd Holmes, aka Optiv, who was a big influence on us both with his solo work and as a member of Cause 4 Concern.”
A heartfelt collab with some of his longest-standing allies, inspired by their deepest D&B inspirations: Foundations is a fitting conclusion to the Particles project where the aim was to focus on the story of each individual collaboration and reveal a little behind the scenes magic surrounding it.
“The way I grew up, and the way I learnt about drum & bass in the beginning, I always found it super exciting when producers explained how they made tracks, how tracks came together, their techniques. That inspired me to make music myself,” says Linz-based Mefjus. “It still excites me now if I see something I haven’t seen before from a technical point of view and I hope people have enjoyed this project as much as I’ve enjoyed making it.”
“If I’ve inspired you to do something or write a track or try a different technique then that’s the very best thing I can take from this. This has to be an essential part of what we do; give back to the community and inspire people like we were inspired ourselves. I want to thank all the artists who’ve joined me on this journey: Camo & Krooked, IMANU, Skeptical, Break, Phace and Noisia. Thanks for being cool with me and being open about your projects.”
If ever there was a time for community support, it’s now. For inspiration, re-cap over all of Mefjus’s Particles collaborations and additional breakdowns and commentaries on his YouTube channel. The full Particles EP with all six collaborations drops on Monday May 18.
