In case the 420 fumes are still lingering in your world today (and even if they’re not), here’s an excuse to invest 10 minutes in unadulterated animated abandon.
The debut episode of Major Lazer’s cartoon premiered last week on FXX, it’s now streaming on Major Lazer’s YouTube channel… And it’s pretty cool.
According to Music Week, the show’s seeds were planted in 2011, but it was written and illustrated in earnest when the series found its channel home a year and a half ago. Nodding deftly at both Manga and classic 80s/90s animation styles (think GI Joe or Mask with a dancehall twist) it’s consummately scored by Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire as the tracks provide the majority of the narrative.
Future episodes are set to feature Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig, Charli XCX and comedians Aziz Ansari and Andy Samberg. Meanwhile this launch episode features rapper Trinidad James. He plays an evil weed monster who Major Lazer literally smokes to death, all the while extolling the virtues of picking a trusted supplier and not getting too high.
Galvanizing the momentum for Major Lazer’s third album Peace Is The Mission (out June 1, it’s set to feature the likes of Ellie Goulding, Pusha T, 2 Chainz and Ariana Grande), it’s a trippy experience and loaded with so much bud love you can almost smell it. Not happy with the streaming quality? The whole first series is available on iTunes.
Check it out below. In the words of the good Major himself… Brace yourself. Hard.
