Alongside Discogs, YouTube, Soundcloud and, of course, UKF.com, WhoSampled is right at the top of any self-respecting music fan’s favourites folder.
Making music journalists sound clever since 2008: WhoSampled is a publicly-sourced treasure trove database of links, facts and connections. Officially the best sites for settling arguments on samples and helping you discover what inspired your favourite artists, it’s just upped its nerd ante with a addictive twist on the classic game of six degrees of separation.
Give it two names as far apart as possible and see whether you can create enough of a challenging network of connections… Chances are your two artists are closer than you think through collaborations, samples, cover versions, remixes and production credits. Here’s how we’ve fared so far…
Zomboy & Beethoven? Only three degrees through MUST DIE and Koji Kondo.
Savant & Stravinsky? Again, three degrees through Nas and John Williams
John B & Sepultura? Three degrees via Swizz Beats and Brian Eno.
Stanton Warriors & Willie Nelson? Three degrees through Busta Rhymes and Snoop Dogg.
Sub Focus & Megadeth? Three again via The Prodigy and Pendulum
Steve Aoki & Radiohead? Three again via Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and Jamie xx
Bad Company & Judge Jules? YES! We have a four… Via Lynn Collins, Five and Paul Masterson.
Four is our best score yet but we’re not stopping until we hit a six. Or, better yet, until we totally stump that stupid graphic and blow his tiny pixelated mind!
Goodbye free time, hello minefield of nerdish connections, factoids and mad links we had no clue about. Let us know your best score in the comments…
