Camo & Krooked’s Guide To… Extreme Sports

Right now in Mayrhofen, the snow capital of Camo & Krooked’s native Austria, thousands of music and sports fans are pushing themselves to their physical limits at Snowbombing. Skiing and boarding by day, partying by night, they’re going to need another week to recover after The Prodigy blow the final headline whistle on April 12.

The line-up is immense with the likes of Chase & Status, Chemical Brothers, Sub Focus, Gorgon City, EZ, Breach and LOADS more performing. The Hospital crew are repping hard, too with London Elektricity, High Contrast, S.P.Y, Logistics and Etherwood all signed up for the snow & sonic showdown.

Camo & Krooked aren’t performing. But they know all about extreme sports, having met as professional skaters back in the day. As well as skateboarding, Krooked’s also snowskates… A sport he can look in the eye a lot more confidently than he can skating these days.

Read on for Camo’s comparison between extreme sports and production. And Krooked’s rather painful, and unfortunate, tale of bone-splintering… And ice pack breaking!

Producing VS Extreme Sports

The best thing about making music over extreme sports is you’re a lot less likely to break a bone

Camo: In a way it’s a little like producing music – you haven’t got a clue what to do when you first start! It’s all about small steps, you have to be committed and passionate. You’ll get nowhere without A LOT of practice. And, with all everything that’s highly skilled and highly competitive… Look at a lot of other people who are doing the same thing and really study what they do and how they do it. Making a proper breakbeat in drum & bass is harder than doing an ollie, but the best thing about making music over extreme sports is you’re a lot less likely to break a bone… Like Krooked did a few years ago!

A Sticky Situation

By the time I got to the hospital it looked like I soiled myself!

Krooked: I broke my radius bone a while back. It was a tough one… We had to play a gig one night in Bratislava and we thought we’d go to the skate park for some fun before the show.

I called the ambulance and they were about 500 metres around the corner. But they drove completely the wrong way and took 45mins to arrive. I was so dizzy when they arrived I asked for some oxygen. They said ‘nah, you don’t need any oxygen’ and they just gave me a cool pack. But when they broke the cool pack open all the brown liquid spilled out and ran down my arm, my back and my crack! By the time I got to the hospital it looked like I soiled myself. I was sitting there for an hour waiting for my x-ray and all the while I was sitting there looking like I’d shat myself. It goes without saying I couldn’t play the gig that night!
