2014 is shaping up to be a massive year for Gorgon City… Major UK Top 5 chart success in February with their current single Ready For Your Love. A slick bass-buffed remix of Kiesza’s Hideaway. Support shows for the mighty Rudimental. More headline tour dates than you could shake a suitcase at. And, this summer, a debut album!
“We’re coming up to the final stages of it,” reveals Kye. “It has to be completed before we go on tour. The plan is to release it around June so we need to get busy and finish the thing!”
“Sound-wise there’s going to be some surprises,” adds Matt. “We’re experimenting with different songs and tempos and styles. It’s much more than just a house music album. We’re really excited about it and we’re excited to see what people will think. It’s all new for us, we’ve never done an album so it’s a new experience.”
Speaking of experiences, last December we hit the road with Matt and Kye and savoured the sights and sounds of New York for a special one off show. This is how it went down:
We thought we’d find out more about the duo’s stateside influences…
“It all goes back to the beginning of garage doesn’t it?” says Matt. “Todd Edwards is probably the biggest influence for many UK artists. He was an ambassador to really crossover between the two sounds. Growing up DJing in and around London with UK garage, house and jungle, that sound was unavoidable.”
“Todd Edwards is known as a god figure over here in the UK,” agrees Kye. “Bringing that cut up vocal in, using it as an instrument and making those shuffley beats. I don’t think he knew he invented speed garage at the time! Another American artist who really impressed me and influenced the way I play house music was Theo Parrish. I saw him a few years ago. He’s one of the best DJs I’ve seen in my life. The way he brings it all together; it totally changed the way I play music.”
