I’m the trap guy who appreciates dubstep more than the average trap guy.
Last week Never Say Die teased us to the max with this brand new one from heRobust: Party McFly.
We’ve heard a bit more than those 15seconds. Trust us; it’s one of heRobust’s best tracks to date.
Out next Monday, and easily one of the funniest track titles we’ve seen in a long time, we thought it was high time we featured the Atlanta bass peddler on this website and ask him where he’d most like to travel to if he had his very own flying DeLorean.
But first: some insight into the track and where heRobust is at right now. Seemingly unstoppable, Party McFly follows a slew of great material and activity including his contribution to the recent Twonk Team mix, his killer collaboration with Snails, his regular free tracks like this, his seemingly endless US tour, the list goes on…
“Party McFly is my take on twerk music,” he explains. “100BPM, it’s kind of an offshoot of trap and in my opinion no one really tried to take it anywhere original or creatively. It’s just a kick, an 808, a snare and then one sample juggled around. I felt there was a lot of creativity missing from that sub genre and I wanted to give it a shot. So the end result is dubsteppy in nature; it’s got a wide variety of bass patches and stuff like that. So that’s nowhere near twerk for a start…But I guess that’s why I’m getting some really interesting results.”
It’s an attitude that’s garnered interesting results on every outing recently and has helped him establish his stall outside of the conventional genre confines. Perhaps this is why he fits in naturally on Never Say Die…
“I’ve always really respected and enjoyed listening to Never Say Die,” he explains. “My place in this whole thing is as a trap guy – that’s what people see me as – but I’m the trap guy who appreciates dubstep more than the average trap guy. Never Say Die and SMOG are two rare examples of labels in that field who are putting out some amazing original music that doesn’t just rely on formula and tries to push things forward. To be honest I didn’t even think I’d be on SKisM’s radar when this link-up first happened!”
Well he’s definitely on our radar. Watch out for Party McFly next week. And if you’re hankering for much larger slices of heRobust pie, he’s confirmed that he’s cooking up a larger body of work for spring 2015. Can’t wait till then? Get a time machine.

“If I’ve got a time machine then I have to see some dinosaurs! I’m not going to spend a huge amount of time there, but you’d be crazy not to check out some dinosaurs if you had the opportunity.”
The 1990s
“This might sound disappointing given the potential a time machine has got, but I’d go back to this period and really get a vibe. All the music from the early 90s defines, or at least contributed, to who I am. The Prodigy were killing it, Aphex Twin and Squarepusher were going back and forth. I’d have loved to contribute to music at that stage. Also with hip-hop, so much amazing music was being made with albums like Illmatic coming out and many other groundbreaking albums. Also, on an Atlanta tip, I’d have loved to experienced Freaknic. The craziest spring break parties that ever existed: all of the African American colleges would have their parties in the middle of the city and just shut the whole place down! It would have been pretty hilarious to take part in that. “
The future…
“I don’t want to know my own personal future. No one should know their own personal future. But I want to know what we eventually make of space. Does it just become a future junk yard? Do we figure out something cool and really beneficial for humankind? Or do we suddenly realise it’s a waste of time and money. How far can we take physics? It’s a fascinating area, I’d love to know how far we take it.”
