My whole philosophy with producing is to keep things simple, and my set up reflects that. Most of the time I just make music on my laptop and headphones wherever I am, at home on the couch, on my bed or while I’m travelling. When I pull myself off the couch and lock in at my desk here are my holy trifecta.
Ableton Push
As an ableton user, I find the push just really nicely integrated into the program, I use it mostly for chopping up samples and having them spread across the pads, the chord function also helps me to quickly create melodies without having to worry too much about playing keys and knowing scales, as someone who just vibes it out, this is super helpful. On top of this, it’s nice for recording automation in a more tactile and natural way. I got mine second hand on facebook marketplace and it’s really sticky for some reason, unsure about that but at least it works.
Headphones – Audio Technica ATH-M60xa
This is more about a principle rather than the headphones themselves, these are my DJ and production headphones, I just know exactly how they are supposed to sound and that’s the most important part of getting your mixdowns as clean as you can. I’ve just done hundreds of mixdowns on these and they’re the main reference, I don’t think they’re special in any way, apart from the fact I find them comfortable, I think I have to have these forever, that’s how much I’m used to them.
Speakers – Adam Audio D3V
I’ve gassed these speakers up so much because they’re just such good value, they’re small space savers that pack a punch. I take them with me overseas because they fit in my suitcase, so I can get a little set up going wherever I am. The low end on these sort of defies gravity, I don’t know how they did it. Perfect if you don’t want massive monitors clogging up your space.
