#TBT – Dreadzone – Gangster (Trolley Snatcha Remix)

So you want to be a gangster? Adolf Hitler is the answer…

So goes the little in-joke in the comment section of this MASSIVE UKF upload from 2010.

Dub fusion legends Dreadzone are set to release Fire In The Dark on Sunday (complete with this immense Teddy Killerz remix we uploaded a while back) on their Dubwiser imprint. So we thought it would be a timely reason to revisit Trolley Snatcha’s remix of Dreadzone – Gangster for this week’s Throwback Thursday feature.

We called the band leader Greg Dread to see what the band thought of the bouncy, bad-ass facelift it received… and the development of dubstep in general. This is what he said:

“I was very inspired by dubstep when it first exploded. It was unique, exciting and refreshing. Like drum & bass, it could only have come out of the UK. It was a new language. These kids were coming along and doing something completely different. People still argue over what constitutes a dubstep track – especially in UKF comment threads! – but for me it’s always been about the emphasis on the 3. The third beat. Just like a dub track. That’s where the rhythmic focus is.

I honestly think this is one of the best dubstep tracks ever. It’s got such a heavy stomp. It defines dubstep for me. It’s got the Long Good Friday elements in there and kept a lot of the original elements of the tune but he’s done such an incredible job. It blew us away when we received it.

It was very exciting for me as a DJ. To mix with other genres and to watch the crowd react to it. It was also very interesting for me as a music lover… Before jungle the UK was only really reinterpreting the sound of other country’s dance music – house, trance, techno and so on – but with jungle, then dubstep, it was a sound that could only be English. The mix of UK rave, dub and black culture. It’s who we are as a nation; these genres could only ever take root in the UK.

It was also very interesting for us as a band, too… We never wanted to incorporate it into the Dreadzone sound because we’d already defined our own sound and these new guys were doing it in such a way we wouldn’t want to imitate it. So we supported it with remixes. Like this Trolley Snatcha remix.

I honestly think this is one of the best dubstep tracks ever. It’s got such a heavy stomp. It defines dubstep for me. It’s got the Long Good Friday elements in there and kept a lot of the original elements of the tune but he’s done such an incredible job. It blew us away when we received it. The comments still amuse me. Adolf Hitler is the answer? Haha! You’ve got some super trolls tuned into what you do. They make me laugh!”
