UKF is 5! We’ve got a huge celebration happening later this year… Sign up to be first in the queue for details as we announce them.
Right now we’re celebrating our milestone anniversary by looking back over some of highest viewed uploads on both UKF Dubstep and UKF Drum & Bass.
First stop: July 19 2010… A brand new band named Modestep come calling with Sunlight. A beautiful fusion of instantly hooky vocals, warm wobbles and a firing D&B switch-up towards the end, we remarked at the time that they had a big future ahead of them.
Their future turned out to be so big, this didn’t drop for a whole year (and was ably hyped by the UKF-released Feel Good). But when it did, it slapped the UK charts right in the top 20 and came complete with one of the coolest videos we’ve ever seen. Between this upload and the original airing in 2010 it’s since scored over 38 million views to date!
Josh and Tony Modestep are currently deep in studio science working on their second album. They have some BIG announcements afoot which we’ll be revealing very soon. In the meantime here they rewind to a formative moment in their career… And a lesson in naughtiness from an elderly actor!
The Story Behind Modestep – Sunlight
The old guy ended up rolling us a joint in the end. We were quite surprised… He knew what he was doing. He was like ‘I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times! Let me show you how it’s done!’
Tony: This brings back a lot of memories! It was all a bit of fun at that point. We were massively into dubstep for a while and we wanted to put our own twist on the sounds we were feeling. This track was the starting point for the whole band. It was the moment that kicked everything off.
Four years down the line and we’re a bit sick of playing the tune so many times but we’ll never forget how important it’s been for us. And we’ll never forget making the video!
Josh: We had this idea that when we’re that age we’d still act like kids do now. So we put the call out for loads of old actors, got them together in one room and asked them to smash it up. The ones who did it best were the ones who got the job! They were all awesome, they all understood what we were after and all totally got involved and played up to it really well. The old guy ended up rolling us a joint in the end. We were quite surprised… He knew what he was doing. He was like ‘I’ve been to Amsterdam a few times! Let me show you how it’s done!’
Tony: It was a great time and we’d like to thank the UKF community for so much support. Stay tuned, we’ve got loads of new music to come very soon!
