Secondcity: City Guide

What a month it’s been for London-based house-head Secondcity. Not content with appearing on dirtybird’s BBQ compilation and tickling the Beatport top spot with his robust, bass-bitten jacker I Enter, he’s also pricked the ears of major UK radio and clubland tastemakers with his forthcoming summer hummer I Wanna Feel. We copped the Brookes Brothers remix of it the other week…

“I think this remix is great,” grins Mr City who was born in Chicago but moved to London when he was 12. “I’ve been a fan of Brookes Brothers for years and years. I was really excited when I heard they’d been asked to remix it. I wasn’t disappointed! It’s interesting hearing peoples’ take on my work. Especially when the remixers have been around for much longer than me. It’s fascinating to hear what people do with something you’ve created.”

It’s safe to say Secondcity has created something pretty big. Picked up by Skream – who told him not to send it to anyone else – I Wanna Feel slowly found its way into key playlists in the same way on old dubplate might… Gradually weaving its way amongst the premiership until Ministry Of Sound and Mistajam’s Speakerbox snapped it up. UKF can’t help but ask… Did he feel like he’d created something special when he was making it?

“It didn’t feel special at all when I made it,” says the man who was brought up on his mum’s collection of Strictly Rhythm releases… A label he’s since released his own music on. “I was just making something I like that I could play out. I never sit down and think ‘I’m going to make a hit today!’ I certainly didn’t think it would have this type of response.”

Something tells us that response is going to get bigger and bigger as we move into the summer. I Wanna Feel is out May 25 and will be followed by collaborations with Christoph, Dale Howard and an EP on Defected’s DFTD.

What with him being called Secondcity we did the honourable thing and asked him for his three favourite cities. We can’t fault his choices…

Chicago

Food, sports and music… This city has it all! Growing up here, I have some really cool memories of seeing Chicago Bulls games, seeing the White Socks playing. I saw Michael Jordan playing baseball when he played for them. I got tonnes of family out there, I’ll be going out again this year. It’s a very friendly, very creative and exciting city.

Berlin

What a city! It’s such an amazing place for everything… Art, culture, restaurants and the clubs are next level. I’ve been lucky to get out there and party quite a bit: Watergate and panoramabar have to be experienced to be believed.

Glasgow

I played at the Arches a while ago and it was amazing. The people, the attitude, the way of life… So cool. No pretentions, it’s all about the music and the party and I love that. I’m looking forward to playing there again sometime.
