Dinner & Dancing With Spearhead Records

Dining and dancing. What a sophisticated way to spend one’s evening. What could be better? Well, how about dinner and dancing when the courses have been expertly paired to match the back catalogue of one of drum & bass’s most cherished imprints?

This year Spearhead Records celebrates an almighty milestone: 20 years at the forefront of the scene. And who better to mark the occasion than the label’s founder, selector and all-round stalwart, BCee. He’ll be teaming up with The Collab’s culinary wizard Paul Human to put together a one-night-only menu that charts Spearhead’s journey from underground upstart to household name.

Each of the five courses takes its cue from two decades of releases, a tasting menu that’s as much about sound as it is about flavour. And once the plates are cleared, the lights go down and the basslines come up, with BCee himself stepping into the booth for an exclusive set. Expect the kind of rolling energy that has carried Spearhead through twenty years of drum & bass history and enough momentum to keep the room moving until late.

We had a quick catch up with BCee to find out a little more about the evening where fine dining and D&B finally sit at the same table.

Dinner and dancing- the best combination! What inspired you to put on a Superclub?

I’m not sure if he wants everybody to know this or not, but I’m going to expose him now. I met a guy called Sam McGregor while doing a stand-up comedy course over the lockdowns. It turns out he owns Signature Brew and we got talking about DJing. He said he did some work with Hospital Records and he had just made a beer called “Playing In The Dark”. The crazy thing was I produced ‘Playing In The Dark’ alongside Villem for the DRS and Dynamite album. We said then we should work together on some projects and eventually did my album launch in his brewery fast forward to now and Sam suggested how about bringing together food and 20 years of spearhead. And that’s where we started.

We’ve all heard of wine pairings… How easy is it to pair food with music?

I thought this was gonna be quite difficult, but when I started going through track names I realised I’d led the label more by my stomach than I thought. Suddenly I saw loads of names that made me think of food and some of my favourite food too. I sent these ideas over to Chef Paul Human, who expanded them into actual recipes and some excellent dishes.

What can we expect from the evening?

What you can expect from the evening is absolutely world class food cooked by, who I consider to be one of London’s top Chefs. I’ll be sharing a little bit about what inspired the food and taking Q&A’s and giving you a few, not-safe-for-work stories from behind the scenes. I’ve also invited a very good friend of mine from the drum and bass scene to join us who is going to play a set. I am also going to play a set which will be led by the audience and who is there. I’ll be up for taking requests and play you a mix of unreleased stuff and some of the classics from years gone by.
