EXCLUSIVE: Truth reveal more on their forthcoming album

A two man act based in New Zealand and California might seem crazy. But it’s a logistical leap that gives deep bass duo Truth a serious edge on the game… Both studio and stage-wise.

“It seems mad,” agrees Tristan, Truth’s New Zealand-based honest operative. “But with the time zones we can work 24/7. We’re always on the watch!”

They’re also always close to a club near you. Well, relatively…

“Being in New Zealand all our lives and having to fly 35 hours to get anywhere takes its toll,” explains Dre, Tristan’s partner in timezones. “The US might seem far away from the UK but being able to jump on a nine hour direct flight is amazing. It’s a strategic position. The takeover bid!”

6,500 miles apart but working like a well-oiled machine: nothing shows this trans-Pacific slickness like their current output. Notably, their Deep Medi EP 30,000ft. It features this soul-stirring sub-ticked gem Lucid:

Inspired by the San Francisco skyline, Lucid adds the perfect balance to the entire EP which spans from the muddy low-end stamps of Trenchtown to the icy futuristic jazz licks of 30,000ft which – as the title suggests – was written by the pair on a plane.

“We’re very happy with the four tracks,” says Dre. “They’ve all got that Truth sound to them but they’re separate vibes.”

And if you think the breadth and sonic scope of this latest EP is rich. Just wait till hear their third artist album. Due our way on June 10, we can exclusively reveal it will be called Hollow World. And it’s coming from one of the most surprising sources in the scene… Datsik’s currently unstoppable Firepower!

It’s an amazing opportunity. Datsik has supported us since day one and even though he makes really heavy stuff he’s a big fan of the deep side.

“It’s not a label we would have thought an album of ours would ever come out on,” admits Dre. “But it’s an amazing opportunity. Datsik has supported us since day one and even though he makes really heavy stuff he’s a big fan of the deep side. So we started talking and thought it would be a great chance to take the Truth sound to more people. It’s all about taking risks and trying to reach the widest audience as possible! Firepower is the best way to do that.”

“We’re able to do what we want to do,” Tristan develops. “Which is awesome as we’ve found our sound a lot more on this album. We’ve focussed on the aesthetic of what we consider Truth to be. We’ve not been so governed by tempos or anything like that. We’re just focussing on our sound and what it means.”

‘Governed by tempos’…. Those words uttered from many other dubstep acts would trigger urgent electrohouse alarm bells. This isn’t the case with Truth.

Sure we’ve dropped and raised tempos – there’s stuff at 160, 125 even 100 – but they’ve all got our sound.

“I do think some people might be surprised by the different genres we’ve explored,” says Dre. “It’s not strictly dubstep but there’s certainly no electrohouse! Sure we’ve dropped and raised tempos – there’s stuff at 160, 125 even 100 – but they’ve all got our sound. They’ll make sense to our past work and to each other as a whole album.”

With the experience of two albums behind them, the world at the palm of their trans-oceanic hands, and an album on the one of the biggest labels in bass, Truth’s edge on the game is only set to get tighter and tighter. Roll on June 10…
