In light of London Elektricity uploading a particularly stunning cover of his evergreen Just One Second by the Riot Jazz Brass Band this weekend, we’ve decided to celebrate a few of the best brass band bass music cover versions.
The worlds of brass bands and heavyweight studio creations seem pretty disparate, but – as our orchestra covers Top 10 proved – sometimes the best the results happen out of extreme fusion. Case in point: some of Jazzsteppa’s earlier horn-fueled dubstep cuts.
Another case in point: Hot 8 Brass Band’s hugely popular take on Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing a few years back…
From the straight up heavy to the smoky jazz, here are six interesting brass interpretations of our favourite music to kick start your week.

London Elektricity – Just One Second (Riot Jazz Brass Band Cover)
The cover that inspired us to write this article. One of the Hospital bossman’s most delicate tunes has been converted to solid brass with respect and raw funk. A staple of the Riot Jazz Brass Band’s live sets for several years, this is beautiful.
Goldie – Inner City Life (Hackney Colliery Band Cover)
Blue Note business: Hackney Colliery Band’s smoky jazz cover is one of the only covers/unofficial versions the Headz founder has ever approved. Not hard to understand why, really.
Hackney Colliery Band – The Prodigy Medley
We can’t include the Inner City Life cover and not include this epic blend of massiveness from the Hackney Colliery Band. The Outer Space section is just pure goosebump city.
The KLF – What Time Is Love? (Williams Fairey Brass Band Cover)
While we’re chatting old school, check this twist on The KLF’s 1991 rave classic What Time Is Love. Apocalyptic!
Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Soul Rebels Cover)
One of a zillion covers of Daft Punk’s unavoidable 2013 disco monster, Soul Rebels apply the best brass treatment out there. If you’re feeling brass shake ups of Daft Punk also search for Brassft Punk – a brand that specialises exclusively in brass Daft Punk covers.
DJ Kool – Let Me Clear My Throat (Renegade Brass Band Cover)
Another old school number… DJ Kool’s heavily sampled Let Me Clear My Throat gets the live treatment from Sheffield 12 piece Renegade Brass Band to awesome effect.
Bonus cover version…
Skrillex – Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites (Rimon Jazz Institute Cover)
Skrillex; smooth jazz style. Technically not a brass band, but the trumpet plays a lead role and the saxophone is close enough to brass to justify its position as a bonus cover worth checking. The sax solo simply kills it.
