K Motionz Evolution Continues

These past few years have been intense for Birmingham’s K-Motionz.

After years of rising up the ranks of D-Stortion since his first release at age 13, things went ballistic for Kallum Brookes last year; he formed Distress Signal with Kanine and Simula, he was nominated in three categories at the Drum&BassArena Awards and his tune Round Ere achieved anthem status and was slammed by everyone across the board from Kings Of The Rollers to Brockie. Most importantly he released his debut album Evolution. He told us at the time the album marked him moving towards a darker style and he wasn’t lying… As this week’s new release proves.

Teased last week online, Original Dubplate is a certified groaner. All dark and rolling, it’s a new twist on the K-Motionz sound and it’s his first self-released tune. Promising more to come this year – on his own platform and other labels – there’s a strong likelihood this year could be just as intense for Mr Motionz. Here’s where he’s at…

What’s the deal? Is this a new label you’re launching?

It’s not a label, I’m just releasing it myself. Loads of people just release their own music now, I just wanted to do it all by myself.

Freedom. You can hear that in the tune too…

I wanted to do it to have my own free reign on it all, select the artwork and do it all myself. I’m still working with labels of course – and I have got other tunes coming out on other labels, too – but this is just for tunes I want to put out.

More options to release more styles of music…

Yeah. Since my album I’ve been doing something a bit different. That’s what Evolution was all about – developing my sound. I’m working on a hybrid between the old sound people know me for and other sounds I want to explore. Bringing something together that people who know me from years ago and new listeners now.

Variety!

I want to put out everything I can sound-wise. I’ve got minimal tunes, liquid tunes, it’s just the case of having the right home for it. I have got some stuff coming out very soon on other labels which I can’t mention yet, things that might surprise people. I’m trying to expand my sound in every way. There’ll also be another self-released single from me around the summer

Did you do the artwork personally?

No my best mate is a graphic designer and he’s done a sick job. He did six versions of it but we stuck with this one. I’m well happy with it. It fits the name of the tune.

It’s nice to have full control over a release, right?

Yeah Kanine and Simula have been doing it, loads of people are. It’s just about putting things we want out and having fun with the music in between releases on other labels. More music, more experiments and sounds. I’m looking forward to putting more out this year…
